Overcoming adversity to jump rope a 5K

Almost exactly one year ago I had to withdraw from the 2017 Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K in Philadelphia because of a torn calf muscle. I was extremely disappointed because I had trained hard for the race, was looking forward to it, and the injury seemed to come out of nowhere. I immediately registered for the 2018 race hoping I’d be able to redeem myself. But then the wheels came off the wagon. On November 1, about six weeks after I withdrew from the race, my dad passed away unexpectedly on the heels of my mom passing away unexpectedly. Then a few months after that I started experiencing more lower back pain than usual. An MRI revealed four herniated discs in my lumbar spine. That happy news was followed by an injury to my right knee.

To say I was at a low point would be an understatement of biblical proportions, but I didn’t quit. Through physical therapy, the love and support of my sister and my friends, the powerful effects of Aynsley Kirshenbaum’s #sugarpurge, and the sheer force of will, I was able to jump rope the entire Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K this Saturday with my girlfriend, Heather, and my dear friend and Punk Rope co-conspirator, Shana. The runners and spectators were so gracious and encouraging. We’ve never been cheered on like that before even though we’ve been jumping 5Ks since 2009. I wanted to share this story because I believe we all have the ability to be resilient and bounce back from any misfortune. In the words of the late, great Jim Valvano, “Never ever give up!”

The Alternating Criss Cross

The alternating criss cross will be one of the events for the 2018 Punk Rope Games. Remember to cross “down” and not “out” and to be patient on your jump.

Jump for Life

You might recall from a recent post that I was beyond psyched about my beloved Virginia Cavaliers who had just been granted the #1 overall seed in the NCAA Men’s D1 basketball tournament. And as you may know by now, Virginia became the first #1 seed in the history of the men’s tournament to lose to a #16 seed (UMBC) in the first round. Some sportswriters are calling it the greatest sports upset of all time. Even so, it was just a game without life or death consequences.

Since then, we bore witness to what I believe is one of the largest and most inspiring marches on our nation’s capital in history, along with hundreds of other impressive marches around the globe. The Washington DC march was organized largely by teenagers who survived the recent mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. And arguably the most powerful speech in DC was delivered by Emma Gonzalez, an 18-year-old senior at Stoneman Douglas. Her speech—much of it without words—lasted 6 minutes and 20 seconds, exactly the amount of time it took Nikolas Cruz to massacre 14 of her classmates as well as 3 teachers and coaches.

In honor of those who lost their lives at Stoneman Douglas, as well as the countless victims of school shootings everywhere; in honor of Emma Gonzalez and the brave survivors who have risen above the cacophony of adult voices trying to silence them; and as a nod to choosing life over death, peace over violence, and love over hate this week’s Punk Rope Challenge is:

Jump for 6 minutes and 20 seconds non-stop.
Choose whichever step you like.
Choose multiple steps if you prefer.
Whatever you do, CHOOSE LIFE.

Challenge of the Week • 3/12/18-3/18/18

When you think of St. Patrick’s Day you might visualize a grand parade, green beer, and four-leaf clovers, but did you know about the St. Patrick’s Cross and St. Patrick’s Bell? Neither did we. Well in honor of St. Patrick, this week’s jump rope challenge combines the cross, the bell jump, and push-ups. You have 10 minutes to perform as many rounds of the following as possible. Feel free to post your results on the Punk Rope Nation group page on Facebook.

100 crosses
10 power push-ups (perform from knees if necessary)
100 bell jumps
10 power push-ups (perform from knees if necessary)

Check out the videos below to learn how to perform each movement.

Jumping for the Animals

On Sat, Feb 17 we held an animal-themed Punk Rope benefit class at CrossFit Adoration in Bethlehem, PA and raised $511 for Peaceable Kingdom, a no-kill shelter in nearby Whitehall. The inspiration was my parents who were both animal lovers and who met in Bethlehem roughly 70 years ago. The playlist consisted of 14 kick-butt songs about animals including Purr Kitty Purr, Jungle Cat, Hound Dog, Barracuda, Hungry Like the Wolf, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and many more.

Final Class of the Season at Solar One

Punk Rope Games IX a Huge Success
More news and pics to come, but here’s the quick and dirty recap:
8 teams competed valiantly for the Punk Rope trophy with Muted Mutton (Joe Katz, Claire Francois, Rich Mudge, and Shawnette Proper) claiming the team title. There were some great costumes, some fantastic individual performances, prizes galore, and lots of laughs. We wouldn’t have it any other way! Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the Games. Who’s in?

Join Shana tomorrow (Monday 9/25) at 7pm
for the final Punk Rope class at Solar One
We had a good run at Solar One, but tomorrow’s Oktoberfest-themed class will be the grand finale this season. Join Shana at 7pm at the East River and 22nd Street. Suggested donation is $15. The next Monday Punk Rope class will take place on 10/30 at the 14th St Y followed by a happy hour at Otto’s Shrunken Head (538 E. 14th St). Naturally the theme will be Halloween and it will also be my homecoming as I’m moving back to NYC on 10/28. Yay! We’re looking hard for a new location for a Manhattan class so please drop us a note if you have a suggestion. We’re also looking to restart Moshfit at Otto’s.

Punk Rope is good enough on its own, but toss in Heather’s homemade pretzels and a killer Oktoberfest playlist and you just can’t beat it. I consider myself a pretzel expert and although I’m slightly biased, Heather’s pretzels—made the old-fashioned way—are second to none. And rumor has it there will be a happy hour at the Diamond Bar after class. Punk Rope Greenpoint takes place every Wed night at 7:30pm at the Greenpoint Y (99 Meserole Ave). First 3 class free for new students. Always free for members of the Greenpoint Y.
